CVE-2026-59774
Overview
This vulnerability is a directory traversal flaw (CWE-22) in Gitea's Org-mode markup renderer. The root cause is improper sanitization of INCLUDE directives processed by the repository markup endpoint, which allows traversal outside the intended repository scope. The affected component is the Org-mode markup rendering feature accessible via the repository markup API endpoint.
Vulnerability Description
Gitea's Org-mode markup renderer processes INCLUDE directives supplied to the repository markup endpoint without preventing access to server-side files. An unauthenticated attacker can use a suitable public repository to read files accessible to the Gitea service account. If the disclosed files include app.ini and its INTERNAL_TOKEN, the attacker can chain the disclosure with internal logger access to modify a Git hook and execute commands as the Gitea service account.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can read arbitrary files on the Gitea server, including sensitive configuration files like app.ini with internal tokens. Using these tokens, the attacker can escalate privileges by modifying Git hooks to execute arbitrary commands as the Gitea service account. This leads to full system compromise of the Gitea service environment and potential lateral movement within the infrastructure. No user interaction or credentials are required to exploit this vulnerability.
Solution
Upgrade Gitea to version 1.27.1 or later as detailed in the vendor advisory GHSA-6v53-hr58-556r available at https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/security/advisories/GHSA-6v53-hr58-556r. The patches merged in pull requests #38642 and #38645 address the issue by restricting INCLUDE directive processing. Follow the official release notes at https://blog.gitea.com/release-of-1.27.1/ for deployment guidance.
