CVE-2026-28336
Overview
The vulnerability in SolarWinds Dameware is a command injection flaw rooted in improper input validation within a component handling remote command execution requests. Specifically, the affected feature processes user-supplied input without sufficient sanitization, enabling injection of arbitrary commands. This occurs in a functionality that requires authentication, indicating the flaw resides in a privileged interface responsible for managing remote host control.
Vulnerability Description
SolarWinds Dameware was found to be affected by a command injection vulnerability that could lead to the compromise of the remotely controlled host. Authentication is required.
Impact
An attacker with valid credentials can execute arbitrary commands on the remotely controlled host, potentially achieving full system compromise. This enables unauthorized access to sensitive data, manipulation of system configurations, and lateral movement within the network. The requirement for authentication limits exploitation to users with some level of access, but the critical severity reflects the high impact of successful exploitation on business operations and data confidentiality.
Solution
SolarWinds has addressed this vulnerability in Dameware version 2026.3.1, as detailed in their security advisory at https://www.solarwinds.com/trust-center/security-advisories/CVE-2026-28336. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the issue. The vendor’s release notes at https://documentation.solarwinds.com/en/success_center/dameware/content/release_notes/dameware_2026-3-1_release_notes.htm provide detailed patch instructions and recommended upgrade procedures.
