CVE-2026-121931
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote OS command injection caused by improper sanitization of user-supplied input in the traceroute_ip argument. The flaw resides in the system function within the apply.cgi file, specifically in the Traceroute Diagnostic Function component of the Linksys WRT54GL firmware version 4.30.18. The injection occurs due to unsafe handling of command-line arguments, allowing arbitrary command execution on the underlying operating system.
Vulnerability Description
A security vulnerability has been detected in Linksys WRT54GL 4.30.18. The impacted element is the function system of the file apply.cgi of the component Traceroute Diagnostic Function. Such manipulation of the argument traceroute_ip leads to os command injection. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploit has been disclosed publicly and may be used. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure but did not respond in any way. This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can execute arbitrary operating system commands on the affected device by exploiting the traceroute_ip parameter. This enables full control over the device, including the ability to manipulate configurations, access sensitive data, or pivot within the network. No user authentication or interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability. The consequence is a complete compromise of the device’s integrity and availability, potentially impacting network security and operations.
Solution
No official vendor patch or advisory is available due to the product being end-of-life and unsupported. Users are advised to discontinue use of Linksys WRT54GL devices running firmware 4.30.18 or earlier. Network segmentation and disabling remote management interfaces can mitigate exposure. Refer to https://vuldb.com/vuln/431043 for detailed mitigation recommendations and monitoring guidance.
