CVE-2026-121930
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote OS command injection caused by improper sanitization of user-supplied input in the ping_ip argument. The flaw exists in the system function within the apply.cgi script, part of the Ping Diagnostic component in Linksys WRT54GL firmware version 4.30.18. The vulnerability arises from unsafe handling of command-line parameters, allowing injected commands to be executed by the underlying operating system shell.
Vulnerability Description
A weakness has been identified in Linksys WRT54GL 4.30.18. The affected element is the function system of the file apply.cgi of the component Ping Diagnostic. This manipulation of the argument ping_ip causes os command injection. The attack can be initiated remotely. The exploit has been made available to the public and could be used for attacks. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure but did not respond in any way. This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can execute arbitrary operating system commands on the affected device with high privileges by exploiting this vulnerability. This enables full system compromise, including modification of device settings, data exfiltration, and potential lateral movement within the network. No user interaction or authentication is required, making it highly exploitable in exposed network environments. The compromised device may be used as a foothold for further attacks or disruption of network services.
Solution
No official patch or advisory has been issued by the vendor as the product is no longer supported. Users are advised to discontinue use of Linksys WRT54GL firmware version 4.30.18 or isolate the device from untrusted networks to mitigate exposure. Refer to the vulnerability database entries at https://vuldb.com/vuln/431042 for ongoing updates and community-provided mitigation recommendations.
