CVE-2026-119742
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection in Nagios XI's MIB upload feature. The root cause is an incomplete sanitization of uploaded filenames in the install_mib() function within mibs.php, which fails to filter out semicolons, pipes, and certain whitespace characters before passing input to a grep command executed via exec(). This flaw exists in the filename handling logic of the MIB upload component.
Vulnerability Description
Nagios XI before 2026R2 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in the MIB upload feature where the install_mib() function in mibs.php sanitizes uploaded filenames with an incomplete character-substitution filter that omits semicolons, pipes, and non-space IFS whitespace characters before passing them to a grep command run via exec(). An authenticated administrator can upload a MIB file with a crafted filename using tab characters to bypass the deny-list and pipe to sh via a multipart POST request to mibs.php, resulting in arbitrary OS command execution as the web server user.
Impact
An authenticated administrator can leverage this vulnerability to execute arbitrary operating system commands on the Nagios XI server with the privileges of the web server user. This allows potential full system compromise, unauthorized data access, and lateral movement within the network. Exploitation requires valid administrator credentials but no additional user interaction, enabling attackers to escalate control over the affected environment and disrupt monitoring operations.
Solution
Nagios Enterprises released a security update in Nagios XI version 2026R2 addressing this issue. Administrators should apply the patch available at https://www.nagios.com/security-disclosures/nagios-xi/2026r2/ to remediate the vulnerability. The vendor advisory provides detailed instructions for updating the product to the fixed version. No alternative workarounds are specified.
