CVE-2026-85706
Overview
This vulnerability is a directory traversal flaw caused by improper path confinement and lack of authentication enforcement within the GitLab repository commits API. The root cause lies in the API's failure to validate and restrict file path inputs, allowing unauthorized access to files outside intended directories. The affected component is the repository commits API in GitLab Community and Enterprise Editions across multiple versions prior to specific patch releases.
Vulnerability Description
GitLab has remediated an issue in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions from 18.7 before 18.11.12, 19.0 before 19.0.9, 19.1 before 19.1.8, 19.2 before 19.2.6, and 19.3 before 19.3.2 that, under certain conditions, an unauthenticated user could have read arbitrary files from the GitLab server due to improper path confinement and missing authentication enforcement in the repository commits API.
Impact
An attacker can read arbitrary files from the GitLab server without any authentication or user interaction, potentially exposing sensitive configuration files, credentials, or source code. This unauthorized file disclosure can lead to information leakage that aids further attacks or compromises confidentiality of critical data. The vulnerability enables attackers to bypass normal access controls on the repository commits API, increasing the risk of data breaches and operational impact for organizations using affected GitLab versions.
Solution
GitLab has released security patches addressing this issue in versions 18.11.12, 19.0.9, 19.1.8, 19.2.6, and 19.3.2. Users should upgrade affected GitLab CE/EE instances to these or later versions immediately. Detailed patch instructions and advisory information are available at the official GitLab work item https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/627748. No alternative workarounds have been documented by the vendor.
