Overview
This vulnerability is an arbitrary file upload flaw arising from inconsistent validation logic within the Gravity Forms WordPress plugin. Specifically, the upload_file function processes files without re-validating extensions when uploaded via hidden file upload fields, allowing bypass of the extension validation pipeline. The affected component is the File Upload field feature configured with Visibility set to 'Hidden' in Gravity Forms versions up to and including 3.1.0.4.
Vulnerability Description
The Gravity Forms plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Arbitrary File Upload in all versions up to, and including, 3.1.0.4 via the upload_file function. This is due to a mismatch between the field validation pipeline and the file persistence pipeline, where hidden file upload fields bypass extension validation and a rejected file's intact upload state is later passed to upload_file() without re-validation. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to upload files that may be executable, which makes remote code execution possible. Exploitation requires the targeted form to contain a File Upload field with its Visibility set to 'Hidden'; the vulnerability is reachable by unauthenticated attackers on any publicly accessible form meeting this condition.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can upload arbitrary files, including executable code, to the server hosting the vulnerable Gravity Forms plugin. This enables remote code execution, potentially leading to full system compromise, data theft, or service disruption. The prerequisite is the presence of a publicly accessible Gravity Forms form with a File Upload field set to hidden visibility, which attackers can exploit without user interaction or credentials.
Solution
Upgrade the Gravity Forms plugin to a version later than 3.1.0.4 as detailed in the official Gravity Forms change log (https://docs.gravityforms.com/gravityforms-change-log/).
