CVE-2026-83844
Overview
This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read in the Windows Paint application, caused by improper bounds checking during image data processing. The flaw occurs within the component handling image file parsing, where crafted input data leads to memory access beyond allocated buffers. This results from inadequate validation of input size parameters in the image rendering routines of Microsoft Paint.
Vulnerability Description
Out-of-bounds read in Windows Paint allows an unauthorized attacker to execute code over a network.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely by sending malicious image files to a system running Microsoft Paint, resulting in arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the Paint process. This can lead to full system compromise, data theft, or lateral movement within a network. No user interaction is required, and the attacker does not need valid credentials to trigger the exploit, increasing the risk of widespread exploitation in enterprise environments.
Solution
Microsoft has released a security update addressing this vulnerability in Microsoft Paint as detailed in their advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-83844. Users should apply the latest cumulative update for their Windows version that includes the patch for this issue. No specific workarounds are recommended; applying the vendor-provided update is the primary mitigation step.
