CVE-2026-83548
Overview
The SMA1000 Work Place interface exposes an unintended alternate access path that reaches internal request-handling functionality before authentication is enforced. Because the appliance treats this path as trusted, the server can be induced to issue requests on the attacker's behalf, which is the classic Server-Side Request Forgery pattern. The flaw sits in the pre-auth surface of the appliance, so no session or credential material is involved in reaching the vulnerable code.
Vulnerability Description
A Pre-authentication SSRF vulnerability exists in the SMA1000 Appliance Work Place interface due to an unintended alternate access path. A remote unauthenticated attacker could potentially exploit this vulnerability to gain unauthorized access to sensitive functionality and perform unauthorized operations.
Impact
A remote attacker with nothing but network reachability to the Work Place interface can drive the appliance into contacting internal hosts and services that are otherwise unreachable from outside, and into invoking privileged functionality it should never expose. Because SMA1000 appliances sit at the network perimeter and hold routes into the internal network, this converts an edge device into a pivot for internal reconnaissance and unauthorized operations. CISA has added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild.
Solution
Apply the fix described in SonicWall PSIRT advisory SNWLID-2026-0016 for the affected SMA1000 firmware. Federal agencies are bound by the CISA KEV due date of 2026-09-05; everyone else should treat that as the ceiling, not the target. Where patching cannot happen immediately, restrict Work Place interface exposure to known source networks and review appliance logs for outbound requests to internal addresses that did not originate from legitimate user sessions.
