CVE-2026-82078
Overview
This vulnerability is a dynamic class loading flaw in PaperCut MF and NG's database connection utilities. The root cause is the application's instantiation of database driver classes based on configurable driver names without validating these against an allowlist of approved drivers. This unsafe dynamic loading occurs within the database connection component, enabling untrusted class loading from the application classpath.
Vulnerability Description
An unsafe dynamic class loading vulnerability exists in the database connection utilities of PaperCut MF and PaperCut NG. The application instantiates database driver classes based on configurable driver names without validating against an allowlist of approved drivers. If an attacker can manipulate system configuration parameters, this enables the execution of arbitrary Java bytecode residing on the application classpath under the security context of the PaperCut server process.
Impact
An attacker with high-level privileges to modify system configuration parameters can execute arbitrary Java bytecode within the PaperCut server process context. This leads to full compromise of the application environment, including potential access to sensitive data and lateral movement within the network. The attack requires the ability to alter configuration settings but does not require user interaction. Successful exploitation can result in complete system compromise and disruption of print management services.
Solution
PaperCut has released an urgent security advisory addressing this vulnerability in PaperCut MF and NG. Administrators should apply the patches provided in the security bulletin dated August 27, 2026, available at https://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/security-bulletin-27-aug-2026-urgent-security-advisory/. The update includes validation of driver class names against an approved allowlist to prevent unsafe dynamic class loading. Following the vendor's instructions in the advisory is essential to remediate this issue.
