CVE-2026-81578
Overview
This vulnerability is an improper access control flaw in the web management interface of PaperCut MF and PaperCut NG. The root cause is the premature execution of backend administrative functions before completing access validation checks. This affects the administrative web interface component responsible for enforcing authentication and authorization controls on remote requests.
Vulnerability Description
An improper access control vulnerability exists in the web management interface of PaperCut MF and PaperCut NG. Under specific conditions, unauthenticated remote requests targeting administrative functions can trigger backend actions prior to the completion of access validation checks. This allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to modify certain system configurations.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can modify critical system configurations by exploiting this vulnerability without any user interaction or credentials. This unauthorized configuration change can lead to system misconfiguration, potential disruption of print services, or further exploitation avenues within the affected environment. The ability to alter administrative settings remotely increases the risk of operational impact and potential lateral movement within the network.
Solution
PaperCut has issued an urgent security advisory on August 27, 2026, addressing this vulnerability. Administrators should apply the updates and patches provided in the official PaperCut security bulletin available at https://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/security-bulletin-27-aug-2026-urgent-security-advisory/. The advisory includes specific version updates and instructions to remediate the improper access control issue in PaperCut MF and NG.
