CVE-2026-74469
Overview
This vulnerability is an integer overflow in the Linux kernel's SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) implementation, specifically in the sctp_assoc_add_peer() function. The root cause is the 16-bit transport_count variable wrapping from 65,535 to zero upon adding the 65,536th unique peer. This affects the SCTP peer transport count tracking mechanism within the kernel's networking subsystem.
Vulnerability Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sctp: prevent peer transport count overflow sctp_assoc_add_peer() increments the association's 16-bit transport_count for every new unique peer. Adding the 65,536th transport wraps the count to zero. SCTP sock_diag uses transport_count to reserve the INET_DIAG_PEERS payload, then copies one sockaddr_storage for every entry in transport_addr_list. After the wrap, a diagnostic dump reserves an empty payload and writes 8 MiB of peer addresses past the skb tail. Reject a new unique peer when transport_count has reached U16_MAX. Perform the check after the existing-peer lookup so a duplicate address continues to return its existing transport at the limit.
Impact
An attacker with the ability to add SCTP peers can cause a heap overflow in the kernel's networking diagnostic interface, potentially leading to memory corruption. This requires at least low-level privileges to interact with SCTP associations but no user interaction is needed beyond that. Exploitation could result in denial of service or escalation of privileges, impacting system stability and security, and enabling further compromise or disruption of network services.
Solution
Apply the patches referenced in the Linux stable kernel commits: b453e00da1211e997b82743d28af7714c59c05c8, dfea32dd76f390e3155177b0038cc47b01386198, and 80f48523a0fe42db2e7375dff4e38a25c117090a. These commits implement a check to reject new unique SCTP peers once transport_count reaches U16_MAX. Users should update to the latest stable Linux kernel versions containing these fixes. Refer to the official Linux kernel stable repository for detailed patch instructions and version applicability.
