CVE-2026-61511
Overview
This vulnerability is an eval injection caused by insufficient input validation in the vB5_Template_Runtime::runMaths() method of vBulletin. The root cause lies in the use of an overly permissive regular expression filter that fails to restrict certain encoded characters, allowing malicious input to be evaluated as PHP code. The flaw affects the template runtime component, specifically the handling of the pagenav[pagenumber] parameter within unauthenticated AJAX template rendering.
Vulnerability Description
vBulletin 5.x through 5.7.5 and 6.x through 6.2.1 contains an eval injection vulnerability in the vB5_Template_Runtime::runMaths() method within the template runtime that allows unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code by supplying crafted input through the pagenav[pagenumber] parameter. Attackers can exploit the insufficiently restrictive regex filter by using phpfuck-style encoding with permitted characters to inject and execute arbitrary PHP code via the unauthenticated ajax/render template route without any authentication.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary PHP code on the affected server, resulting in full system compromise. No authentication or user interaction is required to exploit this flaw. Successful exploitation allows attackers to execute commands, access sensitive data, manipulate application logic, or deploy further malware, leading to potential data breaches, service disruption, and lateral movement within the network.
Solution
vBulletin has released security patches addressing this vulnerability in versions 6.2.1, 6.2.0, and 6.1. Users should upgrade to these patched versions as detailed in the vendor advisory available at https://forum.vbulletin.com/forum/vbulletin-announcements/vbulletin-announcements_aa/4509358-security-patch-released-for-vbulletin-6-2-1-6-2-0-and-6-1-6. Applying these updates will correct the input validation logic in the template runtime to prevent eval injection.
