CVE-2026-58868

CRITICAL POC Pub 02/11 Upd 05/11

Overview

This vulnerability is a heap buffer overflow occurring in the onOutputReceived function within FrameDecoder.cpp of the Google Android media framework. The root cause is an out-of-bounds write triggered by improper bounds checking when processing decoded frame output data. The flaw resides in the frame decoding component responsible for handling media output buffers.

Vulnerability Description

In onOutputReceived of FrameDecoder.cpp, there is a possible out-of-bounds write due to a heap buffer overflow. This could lead to remote code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.

Impact

An attacker can achieve remote code execution on affected Android devices without requiring user interaction or prior authentication. This enables full compromise of the device, including unauthorized access to sensitive data, installation of persistent malware, and control over device functions. The vulnerability facilitates complete system takeover, posing a critical threat to device confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Solution

Google has addressed this issue in the Android Security Bulletin dated 2026-11-01. Users should apply the security patches included in this update, which target the media framework component within Google Android. Detailed patch instructions and advisory information are available at https://source.android.com/docs/security/bulletin/2026/2026-11-01. Applying the vendor-provided update is the recommended remediation step to mitigate this vulnerability.
