CVE-2026-58704
Overview
This vulnerability is a permission bypass caused by a logic error within the Cellular Modem component of Google Android. The flaw arises from improper validation of access control checks, allowing unauthorized operations to be performed. The root cause lies in the modem's internal code path that incorrectly grants privileges without verifying the caller's permissions.
Vulnerability Description
In Cellular Modem, there is a possible permission bypass due to a logic error in the code. This could lead to remote (proximal/adjacent) escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.
Impact
An attacker located near the target device can escalate privileges on the Cellular Modem without needing prior authentication or user involvement. This unauthorized privilege escalation may allow manipulation of modem functions, potentially compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability of cellular communications. The attacker can execute high-impact actions such as intercepting or altering communications, leading to significant security breaches on affected Android devices.
Solution
Google has addressed this issue in the Android Security Bulletin dated September 1, 2026, applicable to all affected Android versions. Users and administrators should apply the security updates provided by Google for the Cellular Modem component as detailed in the official bulletin at https://source.android.com/docs/security/bulletin/pixel/2026/2026-09-01. No specific workarounds are recommended; timely patching is essential to mitigate this vulnerability.
