CVE-2026-5430
Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass caused by improper validation of JSON Web Tokens (JWT) in the WSO2 Universal Gateway's JWT authentication mechanism. The root cause lies in the acceptance of JWT tokens signed with algorithms that are not explicitly configured or supported by the system. This flaw affects the JWT authentication component responsible for verifying token signatures before granting access.
Vulnerability Description
The JWT authentication mechanism accepts tokens signed with algorithms other than those explicitly configured or supported. This allows an attacker to craft a JWT with an unsupported algorithm, which is then incorrectly validated, leading to unauthorized access. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in unauthorized access to the system, including the potential compromise of administrative accounts and full account takeover. The CVSS score is adjusted to 9.8 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) in single-tenant deployments, reflecting that the impact is contained within a single security authority boundary.
Impact
An attacker can gain unauthorized access to the WSO2 Universal Gateway, including administrative privileges, without valid credentials or prior authentication. This enables full account takeover and potential compromise of sensitive data and system controls. Exploitation requires no user interaction or authentication and can lead to complete system compromise within the affected security boundary. In single-tenant environments, the impact is confined but still allows unauthorized administrative control.
Solution
WSO2 has released security advisory WSO2-2026-5328 addressing this vulnerability. Users of WSO2 API Manager and API Control Plane should apply the patches or updates provided in this advisory as detailed at https://security.docs.wso2.com/en/latest/security-announcements/security-advisories/2026/WSO2-2026-5328/. The advisory includes fixed versions and configuration guidance to restrict JWT signing algorithms to supported values, mitigating the issue effectively.
