CVE-2026-49869
Overview
The AuthenticationFilter in Kestra OSS whitelists the public configuration endpoint from Basic Auth using request.getPath().endsWith("/configs"), a suffix match where an exact path comparison was intended. Any API path whose final segment happens to be configs therefore skips authentication entirely. The flaw is in the filter's matching logic, so it applies across the API surface rather than to one endpoint.
Vulnerability Description
Kestra is an open-source, event-driven orchestration platform. Prior to 1.0.45 and 1.3.21, AuthenticationFilter in Kestra OSS uses request.getPath().endsWith("/configs") to whitelist the public configuration endpoint from Basic Auth. Because the check is a suffix match rather than an exact path match, any API path whose last segment is configs bypasses authentication entirely. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this to create and execute arbitrary workflows without credentials. Because Kestra ships with script execution plugins (plugin-script-shell, plugin-script-python, etc.) enabled by default, this directly results in unauthenticated Remote Code Execution as root inside the Kestra worker container. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.0.45 and 1.3.21.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker creates and executes arbitrary workflows without credentials. Because Kestra ships with script execution plugins such as plugin-script-shell and plugin-script-python enabled by default, a workflow is a code execution primitive, and the result is unauthenticated remote code execution as root inside the Kestra worker container. An orchestration platform holds the connection secrets for every system it automates, so that container is a launch point into the rest of the environment. CISA lists the flaw in the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.
Solution
Upgrade Kestra to 1.0.45 or 1.3.21, the fixed releases named in advisory GHSA-5vc5-wxxq-3fjx. The CISA KEV due date was 2026-09-05. Until the upgrade lands, deny external access to any API path ending in configs at the reverse proxy, and afterwards review the execution history for workflows that no operator authored and rotate the credentials stored for connected systems.
