CVE-2026-48710
Overview
This vulnerability is an HTTP Host header validation flaw affecting the Starlette ASGI framework prior to version 1.0.1. The root cause lies in the absence of validation on the Host header before it is used to reconstruct the request.url attribute. The routing mechanism relies on the raw HTTP path, but request.url is rebuilt from the unvalidated Host header, causing a discrepancy between the actual requested path and the reconstructed URL path.
Vulnerability Description
Starlette is a lightweight ASGI framework/toolkit. Prior to version 1.0.1, the HTTP `Host` request header was not validated before being used to reconstruct `request.url`. Because the routing algorithm relies on the raw HTTP path while `request.url` is rebuilt from the `Host` header, a malformed header could make `request.url.path` differ from the path that was actually requested. Middleware and endpoints that apply security restrictions based on `request.url` (rather than the raw `scope` path) could therefore be bypassed. Users should upgrade to a version greater than or equal to version 1.0.1, which validates the `Host` header against the grammar of RFC 9112 §3.2 / RFC 3986 §3.2.2 when constructing `request.url` and falls back to `scope["server"]` for malformed values.
Impact
An attacker can bypass security controls that rely on request.url for path-based restrictions without authentication or user interaction. This can lead to unauthorized access to protected routes or functionality within applications using Starlette. The attacker can manipulate the Host header to cause discrepancies in URL path validation, potentially exposing sensitive data or functionality otherwise protected by middleware or endpoint security checks.
Solution
Users of Kludex Starlette should upgrade to version 1.0.1 or later, which implements proper Host header validation according to RFC 9112 §3.2 and RFC 3986 §3.2.2 and falls back to scope["server"] for malformed values. Refer to the Kludex Starlette security advisory GHSA-86qp-5c8j-p5mr and the commit at https://github.com/Kludex/starlette/commit/764dab0dcfb9033d75442d7a359645c9f94648c6 for detailed patch information and upgrade instructions.
