CVE-2026-42533
Overview
This vulnerability is a heap buffer overflow rooted in improper handling of regex capture variables within the map directive of F5 NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source. The flaw occurs when a string expression references the map's regex capture variables before the map output variable or uses a non-cacheable variable in a string expression under specific conditions. The affected component is the NGINX worker process responsible for processing HTTP requests and evaluating map directives with regex matching.
Vulnerability Description
A vulnerability exists in NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source when a map directive uses regex matching and a string expression references the map's regex capture variables before referencing the map output variable. Alternatively, the same result could be achieved by using a non-cacheable variable in a string expression under certain conditions. An unauthenticated attacker along with conditions beyond their control can exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted HTTP requests. This may cause a heap buffer overflow in the NGINX worker process leading to a restart. Additionally, attackers can execute code on systems with Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) disabled or when the attacker can bypass ASLR. Impact: This vulnerability may allow remote attackers to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) on the NGINX system or to possibly trigger a code execution. There is no control plane exposure; this is a data plane issue only. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely by sending specially crafted HTTP requests, causing a denial-of-service via worker process crashes or potentially executing arbitrary code on the server. This can lead to service disruption or full system compromise in environments where ASLR is disabled or circumvented. The vulnerability exclusively affects the data plane, with no exposure to the control plane, enabling attackers to impact runtime request handling without requiring user interaction or credentials.
Solution
F5 recommends applying the patches detailed in their advisory K000162097 available at https://my.f5.com/manage/s/article/K000162097. The advisory covers affected products including F5 NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source versions within the Gateway Fabric and Ingress Controller lines. Users should upgrade to the fixed versions specified in the advisory. No alternative workarounds are provided; following the vendor's patch instructions is essential to remediate this issue.
