CVE-2026-111497

CRITICAL POC Pub 22/10 Upd 22/10

Overview

This vulnerability is a buffer overflow caused by improper bounds checking in the Brotli decoder implementation, specifically in the c/dec/decode.c source file. The flaw occurs during the decoding process of Brotli-compressed streams, where crafted input can overwrite adjacent memory regions within the decoder's internal state. Affected components include Google Brotli library versions 1.0.3 through 1.2.0 across all supported platforms.

Vulnerability Description

A buffer overflow vulnerability in the Brotli decoder (c/dec/decode.c) in Google Brotli versions 1.0.3 through 1.2.0 on all platforms allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to corrupt adjacent decoder state memory, disclose sensitive memory contents, cause a denial of service, or potentially execute arbitrary code using a crafted Brotli-compressed stream. Users need to update any Brotli libraries or binaries between 1.0.3 through 1.2.0 to the latest available version: 1.0.10 or 1.1.1 or 1.2.1.

Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability by supplying a malicious Brotli-compressed stream to an application using the affected decoder, resulting in disclosure of sensitive memory contents, denial of service via application crash, or execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the decoding process. This can lead to full system compromise or data breaches in environments where Brotli decompression is performed on untrusted input. No user interaction or credentials are necessary to trigger the exploit, increasing the attack surface for remote exploitation.

Solution

Users should upgrade any Google Brotli libraries or binaries from versions 1.0.3 through 1.2.0 to the fixed releases 1.0.10, 1.1.1, or 1.2.1 as applicable. Detailed patch instructions and updates are available in the Node.js October 2026 Security Releases advisory at https://nodejs.org/en/blog/vulnerability/october-2026-security-releases#nodejs-brotli-decoder-out-of-bounds-write-permits-remote-code-execution-cve-2026-111497---high. No workarounds are documented; applying the vendor-provided patches is required to remediate this issue.
