CVE-2026-111229
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper input sanitization within the captive portal high availability (HA) synchronization feature of Netgate pfSense CE. Specifically, the services_captiveportal_hasync.php script fails to escape shell metacharacters in XMLRPC responses, allowing crafted input to be passed directly to the pfctl command. The affected component is the captiveportal_load_pfctl function, which processes connected user data during HA synchronization between pfSense instances.
Vulnerability Description
pfSense CE 2.7.0 through 2.9.0 contains a command injection vulnerability in services_captiveportal_hasync.php that allows users with only the Captive Portal HA privilege to execute commands as root. Attackers can set backwardsyncip to a malicious XMLRPC server returning connected_users with shell metacharacters in ip or mac fields, which captiveportal_load_pfctl passes unescaped to a pfctl shell command.
Impact
An attacker with Captive Portal HA privileges can execute arbitrary commands as the root user on the pfSense CE system. This level of access enables full system compromise, including unauthorized data access, configuration changes, and potential lateral movement within the network. Exploitation requires an authenticated user account with the captive portal HA privilege but does not require additional user interaction or elevated privileges beyond that role.
Solution
Netgate has addressed this issue in pfSense CE version 2.9.1. Users should upgrade affected installations from versions 2.7.0 through 2.9.0 to 2.9.1 or later. Detailed patch instructions and advisory information are available on the official pfSense GitHub repository and the Netgate support site. No specific workarounds are documented; upgrading is the recommended remediation step.
