CVE-2026-111218
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection flaw rooted in improper input validation of the limiter number field within the Traffic Shaper Limiters feature of Netgate pfSense CE. Authenticated users with appropriate limiter privileges can manipulate the 'number' parameter, which is passed unquoted to the dnctl command via a shell invocation, leading to execution of arbitrary root commands. The flaw resides in the delete_queue() function handling limiter edits in pfSense versions 2.7.0 through 2.9.0.
Vulnerability Description
Netgate pfSense CE 2.7.0 through 2.9.0 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users with Traffic Shaper Limiters privileges to execute root commands by tampering with the limiter number field. Attackers can submit a malicious hidden 'number' value when editing a limiter, then delete it so delete_queue() passes the unquoted value to dnctl via /bin/sh as root.
Impact
An attacker with Traffic Shaper Limiters privileges can execute arbitrary commands as root on the pfSense system, enabling full system compromise. This allows modification or deletion of system files, installation of persistent backdoors, or disruption of network traffic shaping functions. The exploit requires an authenticated user account with specific limiter privileges but no additional user interaction. Successful exploitation can lead to complete control over the firewall appliance, risking network security and availability.
Solution
Users should upgrade Netgate pfSense CE to a version later than 2.9.0 where this vulnerability is addressed, as detailed in the vendor advisories linked at https://abraxaslabs.tech/research/pfsense-limiter-number. The vendor has released patches correcting input validation in the Traffic Shaper Limiters component. Administrators are advised to consult the official pfSense update documentation for precise upgrade instructions and verify that limiter privileges are restricted to trusted users only.
