CVE-2026-111217
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection rooted in improper input validation of the CARP VHID parameter within Netgate pfSense CE versions up to 2.9.0. Authenticated users with Virtual IP edit privileges can inject shell metacharacters into the VHID value, which is subsequently passed unsanitized to system-level commands. The affected components are the interface IP alias configuration and CARP status rendering functions, specifically interface_ipalias_configure() and get_carp_interface_status().
Vulnerability Description
Netgate pfSense CE through 2.9.0 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users with Virtual IP edit privileges to execute commands as root by storing an unvalidated CARP VHID. Attackers can supply a VHID containing shell metacharacters that executes via interface_ipalias_configure() ifconfig calls or get_carp_interface_status() when CARP status is rendered.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated Virtual IP editing rights can execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the pfSense system. This enables full system compromise, including access to sensitive data, modification of firewall rules, and persistence mechanisms. The prerequisite is possession of a user account with sufficient privileges to modify Virtual IP settings. Successful exploitation can disrupt network services, allow lateral movement within the protected network, and compromise the integrity and confidentiality of network traffic.
Solution
Users should upgrade Netgate pfSense CE to version 2.9.1 or later, where input validation for the CARP VHID parameter has been implemented to mitigate command injection. Detailed patch instructions and advisory information are available from the vendor at https://abraxaslabs.tech/research/pfsense-carp-vhid and the associated GitHub repository https://github.com/abraxas/pfsense-carp-vhid. No vendor advisory ID was specified; users must follow the vendor’s official update channels to obtain the fixed release.
