CVE-2026-111216
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection in Netgate pfSense CE versions up to 2.9.0. It arises from improper input validation of the IPv6 link-local zone index within the gateway Monitor IP configuration. The start_dpinger() function passes this unescaped zone parameter directly to the dpinger shell command, enabling injection of shell metacharacters.
Vulnerability Description
Netgate pfSense CE through 2.9.0 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users with gateway edit privileges to execute commands as root by injecting shell metacharacters into an IPv6 link-local zone index. Attackers can set a gateway Monitor IP whose unvalidated zone carries a payload, which start_dpinger() passes unescaped to the dpinger shell command when monitoring is applied.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated access and gateway edit privileges can execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system with root privileges by injecting shell commands into the IPv6 zone index. This enables full system compromise, including unauthorized data access, system control, and potential lateral movement within the network. The prerequisite is possession of an account with gateway configuration rights, which may be limited to administrative or privileged users.
Solution
Upgrade Netgate pfSense CE to a version later than 2.9.0 where this vulnerability is addressed. Detailed patch instructions and source code fixes are available in the official pfSense GitHub repository (https://github.com/pfsense/pfsense/commit/9363ac5b8651a1c7a333180425ce7719070f95f9) and security advisories on the Netgate website. No specific workaround is documented; applying the vendor-supplied patch or upgrade is required to remediate this issue.
