CVE-2026-111214
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection rooted in improper input validation of the parent interface name within the QinQ configuration feature of Netgate pfSense CE. The flaw arises because the parent interface name is stored without sanitization and later interpolated directly into shell commands executed by the system. The affected component is the QinQ editing functionality in pfSense CE versions 2.7.0 through 2.9.0, which allows privileged users to manipulate network interface configurations.
Vulnerability Description
Netgate pfSense CE 2.7.0 through 2.9.0 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users with QinQ edit privilege to run commands by storing an unvalidated parent interface name. Attackers can save a crafted 'if' value, then edit the QinQ entry so it is interpolated into ifconfig shell commands, executing commands as root.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated access and QinQ editing privileges can execute arbitrary commands with root-level permissions on the pfSense system. This can lead to full system compromise, including unauthorized data access, persistent backdoors, or disruption of network services. The prerequisite is possession of an account with QinQ configuration rights, which may be limited to network administrators. Successful exploitation undermines the integrity and availability of the firewall appliance and connected network infrastructure.
Solution
Netgate has addressed this vulnerability in pfSense CE versions later than 2.9.0. Users should upgrade to the latest pfSense CE release where input validation for QinQ parent interface names has been implemented. Detailed patch instructions and updates are available from Netgate’s official resources and the referenced advisories on https://abraxaslabs.tech/research/pfsense-qinq-parent-if. No specific workaround is documented; upgrading is the recommended remediation step.
