CVE-2026-110908
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection in the Netgate pfSense FRR package's status filter functionality. The root cause lies in improper sanitization of user-supplied filter input concatenated into a single-quoted sed expression, where escapeshellarg() output is bypassed. The vulnerable component is the FRR status filter accessed via the WebGUI page-status-frr privilege interface.
Vulnerability Description
Netgate pfSense FRR package (pfSense-pkg-frr) 2.0.2_1 and source revision 2.1.2_1 contain an OS command injection vulnerability in the FRR status filter. An authenticated WebGUI user with only the page-status-frr privilege can supply a filter value that breaks out of a single-quoted sed expression into which escapeshellarg() output is concatenated. Shell command substitution is then evaluated by a popen() pipeline, allowing attacker-selected commands to execute as root. There are updated FRR packages for pfSense Plus 26.07/26.03.1 and CE 2.9.0/2.8.1.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated WebGUI access and limited page-status-frr privileges can execute arbitrary commands as root on the pfSense system. This enables full system compromise, including unauthorized data access, configuration manipulation, or service disruption. The prerequisite is having a valid account with the specific page-status-frr privilege, which may be granted to low-privileged users. The exploitation can lead to complete control over the firewall appliance and potential lateral movement within the network.
Solution
Netgate has released updated FRR packages addressing this vulnerability for pfSense Plus versions 26.07 and 26.03.1, and Community Edition versions 2.9.0 and 2.8.1. Administrators should upgrade to these fixed versions as detailed in the official pfSense Redmine advisory (https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/17134). No alternative workarounds are documented; applying the vendor-supplied patches is required to remediate the issue.
