CVE-2026-110650
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection in the thumbnail Python package, specifically within the generate_thumbnail() function. The root cause is improper sanitization of file path inputs, which are passed directly to os.system() calls invoking external utilities like ffmpeg, convert, or unoconv. This flaw affects the thumbnail generation component handling user-supplied file names, enabling injection of shell metacharacters into command execution contexts.
Vulnerability Description
The thumbnail Python package through 1.5 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in generate_thumbnail() that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying shell metacharacters in file paths. Attackers who control a file name passed to generate_thumbnail, such as an uploaded file, can inject commands into os.system() calls running ffmpeg, convert or unoconv with the Python process privileges.
Impact
An attacker controlling a file name passed to generate_thumbnail() can execute arbitrary OS commands on the host system with the Python process privileges. No authentication or user interaction is necessary beyond supplying a crafted file name, enabling full system compromise, data theft, or lateral movement within the environment. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, disruption of service, or persistent footholds on affected systems running the vulnerable package.
Solution
Upgrade the thumbnail Python package to a version that includes the fix merged in pull request #9 on the official GitHub repository. The patched version addresses command injection by sanitizing or avoiding unsafe os.system() calls in generate_thumbnail(). Refer to https://github.com/anshulkharb/thumbnail/pull/9 for detailed patch information and apply this update to all affected deployments of thumbnail through version 1.5.
