CVE-2026-110639
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection caused by improper sanitization of user-controlled inputs within the @mborne/extract library prior to version 0.2.1. The root cause lies in passing unquoted, unsanitized shell metacharacters from the archivePath and targetDir options directly into shelljs exec() commands used by multiple archive extractors (unzip, 7z, tar-bz2, gz). This flaw affects the extract() function's handling of these parameters, leading to command injection in the Node.js process context.
Vulnerability Description
@mborne/extract before 0.2.1 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying shell metacharacters in archivePath or targetDir options. Attackers controlling these values passed to extract() can inject commands into unquoted shelljs exec() strings in the unzip, 7z, tar-bz2 and gz extractors, running them with Node.js process privileges.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary OS commands on the host running the vulnerable @mborne/extract library by supplying crafted inputs to archivePath or targetDir. This grants the attacker the ability to execute commands with the same privileges as the Node.js process, potentially leading to full system compromise, data exfiltration, or lateral movement within the environment. No user interaction or authentication is required to trigger this vulnerability, increasing its exploitability in automated or remote attack scenarios.
Solution
Upgrade @mborne/extract to version 0.2.1 or later, which includes patches that properly sanitize and quote inputs passed to shelljs exec() commands, as detailed in the GitHub pull request #8 and commit 585e5b29657379e73c04f6f950ea8dc5319f8ae1. Refer to the official release notes at https://github.com/mborne/node-extract/releases/tag/v0.2.1 for detailed patch instructions and ensure all deployments use the fixed version to mitigate this vulnerability.
