CVE-2026-110638
Overview
This vulnerability is an OS command injection caused by improper sanitization of user-supplied document paths in the doc-recog library up to version 1.1.6. The root cause lies in the DocData._readPDF function, which executes a shell-based pdftotext command using the provided file path without neutralizing command substitution syntax such as $(...) or backticks. This flaw affects the recog() and tag() methods that pass input directly to the vulnerable exec call within the Node.js environment.
Vulnerability Description
doc-recog through 1.1.6 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute commands by supplying crafted document paths to recog() or tag(). Attackers can embed $(...) or backtick command substitution in the file path, which DocData._readPDF passes to a shell-based pdftotext exec call, running commands with Node.js process privileges.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary OS commands on the host running doc-recog by supplying specially crafted document paths. This grants the attacker the ability to execute any command with the same privileges as the Node.js process, potentially leading to full system compromise, data theft, or service disruption. No user interaction or credentials are required to exploit this vulnerability, enabling remote attackers to leverage this flaw in automated or manual attack scenarios.
Solution
Upgrade doc-recog to a version including the fix merged in pull request https://github.com/zepspaiva/doc-recog/pull/2, which eliminates the unsafe shell command execution in DocData._readPDF. Refer to the official GitHub repository at https://github.com/zepspaiva/doc-recog for updated releases beyond version 1.1.6. Follow the instructions in the repository and advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/doc-recog-through-1.1.6-os-command-injection-via-docdata-readpdf-file-path for detailed patching guidance.
