CVE-2024-6127
Overview
This vulnerability is a path traversal flaw in BC Security Empire versions prior to 5.9.3, affecting the payload upload mechanism. The root cause lies in insufficient validation of file path inputs during the upload process, allowing crafted payloads to specify arbitrary filesystem locations. The affected component is the HTTP-based agent communication interface responsible for handling payload uploads after cryptographic handshake completion.
Vulnerability Description
BC Security Empire before 5.9.3 is vulnerable to a path traversal issue that can lead to remote code execution. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability over HTTP by acting as a normal agent, completing all cryptographic handshakes, and then triggering an upload of payload data containing a malicious path.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can execute arbitrary code on the BC Security Empire server by exploiting the path traversal in the payload upload feature. No prior authentication or user interaction is required, and the attacker must only establish an HTTP connection and complete cryptographic handshakes. Successful exploitation can lead to full system compromise, data breach, or service disruption. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) indicates low attack complexity and no privileges needed, highlighting the critical nature of this flaw.
Solution
Users should upgrade BC Security Empire to version 5.9.3 or later as detailed in the official vendor changelog at https://github.com/BC-SECURITY/Empire/blob/8283bbc77250232eb493bf1f9104fdd0d468962a/CHANGELOG.md?plain=1#L102. This release includes fixes that properly validate and sanitize file paths during payload uploads to prevent traversal. No alternative workarounds are documented; applying the vendor patch is required to remediate the issue.
