CVE-2024-55982
Overview
This vulnerability is a Blind SQL Injection in the richteam Share Buttons – Social Media WordPress plugin, specifically affecting versions up to 1.0.2. The root cause is improper neutralization of special characters in SQL commands, allowing untrusted input to be injected directly into database queries without adequate sanitization or parameterization. The flaw resides in the plugin’s backend handling of user-supplied data within SQL statements, enabling manipulation of query logic at the database layer.
Vulnerability Description
Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an SQL Command ('SQL Injection') vulnerability in richteam Share Buttons – Social Media rich-web-share-button allows Blind SQL Injection. This issue affects Share Buttons – Social Media: from n/a through <= 1.0.2.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to perform Blind SQL Injection attacks against the WordPress database used by the plugin. This enables extraction of sensitive backend information such as database schema details and potentially user data. The attacker can also cause partial denial of service by manipulating database queries. Because no authentication or user interaction is required, the vulnerability allows remote attackers to compromise data confidentiality and integrity within the affected WordPress environment, leading to potential data breaches and service disruption.
Solution
Upgrade the richteam Share Buttons – Social Media WordPress plugin to version 1.0.3 or later, where the SQL injection vulnerability has been addressed. Refer to the Patchstack advisory at https://patchstack.com/database/Wordpress/Plugin/rich-web-share-button/vulnerability/wordpress-share-buttons-social-media-plugin-1-0-2-sql-injection-vulnerability-2?_s_id=cve for detailed patch instructions and version updates. Applying the vendor-provided patch or update is the recommended remediation to eliminate this vulnerability.
