CVE-2024-50379
Overview
This vulnerability is a Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition occurring during the JSP compilation process in Apache Tomcat. The flaw arises from improper synchronization when accessing files on case-insensitive file systems while the default servlet is configured with write permissions. This race condition affects the JSP compiler component within Apache Tomcat's servlet container, leading to inconsistent file state validation and usage.
Vulnerability Description
Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition vulnerability during JSP compilation in Apache Tomcat permits an RCE on case insensitive file systems when the default servlet is enabled for write (non-default configuration). This issue affects Apache Tomcat: from 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.1, from 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.33, from 9.0.0.M1 through 9.0.97. The following versions were EOL at the time the CVE was created but are known to be affected: 8.5.0 though 8.5.100. Other, older, EOL versions may also be affected. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 11.0.2, 10.1.34 or 9.0.98, which fixes the issue.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability without user interaction to execute arbitrary code on the server hosting Apache Tomcat. This can lead to full system compromise, allowing attackers to run malicious commands, access sensitive data, or pivot within the network. The prerequisite is that the default servlet is enabled with write permissions on a case-insensitive file system, which is not the default configuration but may be enabled in some deployments.
Solution
Users should upgrade Apache Tomcat to versions 11.0.2, 10.1.34, or 9.0.98, which contain fixes for this vulnerability. Detailed patch instructions and advisories are available at the Apache Tomcat mailing list: https://lists.apache.org/thread/y6lj6q1xnp822g6ro70tn19sgtjmr80r. No vendor workarounds are specified beyond upgrading to these fixed versions.
