CVE-2024-10441

CRITICAL POC Pub 19/03 Upd 28/03

Overview

This vulnerability is a code injection flaw caused by improper encoding or escaping of output within the system plugin daemon of Synology BeeStation OS and DiskStation Manager. The root cause lies in the failure to sanitize output data correctly, leading to injection of malicious code. The affected component is the system plugin daemon responsible for processing and rendering output in these Synology operating systems.

Vulnerability Description

Improper encoding or escaping of output vulnerability in the system plugin daemon in Synology BeeStation OS (BSM) before 1.1-65374 and Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) before 7.2-64570-4, 7.2.1-69057-6 and 7.2.2-72806-1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.

Impact

An unauthenticated remote attacker can execute arbitrary code on the affected Synology devices by exploiting this vulnerability, gaining full control over the system. This enables unauthorized access to sensitive data, manipulation of system settings, and potential deployment of persistent malware. The attack requires no user interaction or credentials, allowing for remote compromise of critical infrastructure running Synology BeeStation OS or DiskStation Manager.

Solution

Synology has released security advisories Synology_SA_24_20 and Synology_SA_24_23 addressing this issue. Users should update Synology BeeStation OS to version 1.1-65374 or later and DiskStation Manager to versions 7.2-64570-4, 7.2.1-69057-6, or 7.2.2-72806-1 or newer. Detailed patch instructions and update procedures are available at the official Synology security advisory pages: https://www.synology.com/en-global/security/advisory/Synology_SA_24_20 and https://www.synology.com/en-global/security/advisory/Synology_SA_24_23.
