CVE-2023-5869
Overview
This vulnerability is an integer overflow occurring during SQL array value modification within PostgreSQL. The root cause lies in missing overflow checks when handling array inputs, allowing improper calculation of memory allocation sizes. The affected component is the PostgreSQL database server's array modification logic, which fails to validate input length, resulting in out-of-bounds memory operations.
Vulnerability Description
A flaw was found in PostgreSQL that allows authenticated database users to execute arbitrary code through missing overflow checks during SQL array value modification. This issue exists due to an integer overflow during array modification where a remote user can trigger the overflow by providing specially crafted data. This enables the execution of arbitrary code on the target system, allowing users to write arbitrary bytes to memory and extensively read the server's memory.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated database access can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the database server. This includes writing arbitrary bytes to memory and reading sensitive server memory contents, potentially leading to full system compromise. The prerequisite is possession of valid database credentials with permission to execute SQL commands. Exploitation can result in unauthorized data disclosure, privilege escalation, and disruption of database services.
Solution
Red Hat has issued multiple advisories (RHSA-2023:7545, RHSA-2023:7579, RHSA-2023:7580, RHSA-2023:7581, RHSA-2023:7616) addressing this vulnerability in Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security 4.2 and PostgreSQL packages. Users should apply the updates as specified in these advisories. Detailed patch instructions and version-specific fixes are available at the Red Hat security portal (https://access.redhat.com/errata/) and the associated PostgreSQL release announcements.
