CVE-2023-38036
Overview
This vulnerability is a classic buffer overflow occurring in the Ivanti Avalanche Manager component prior to version 6.4.1. The flaw arises from improper bounds checking on input data processed by the management service, allowing an attacker to overwrite memory buffers. The affected feature is the core Avalanche Manager service responsible for handling unauthenticated network requests.
Vulnerability Description
A security vulnerability within Ivanti Avalanche Manager before version 6.4.1 may allow an unauthenticated attacker to create a buffer overflow that could result in service disruption or arbitrary code execution.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this buffer overflow to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the Avalanche Manager service, potentially leading to full system compromise. Alternatively, the attacker may cause a denial of service by crashing the service, disrupting management operations. No authentication or user interaction is necessary, enabling remote exploitation over the network. This can result in unauthorized control over the affected infrastructure managed by Ivanti Avalanche, affecting business continuity and security posture.
Solution
Ivanti has released a security advisory recommending immediate upgrade to Ivanti Avalanche Manager version 6.4.1 or later to remediate this vulnerability. Detailed patch instructions and mitigation steps are available at https://forums.ivanti.com/s/article/Security-Advisory-Avalanche-CVE-2023-38036. Administrators should apply the update promptly to eliminate the buffer overflow risk and ensure system integrity.
