CVE-2022-21907
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw rooted in improper handling within the HTTP Protocol Stack component of Microsoft Windows 10. The flaw arises from a memory corruption issue triggered by specially crafted HTTP packets processed by the protocol stack, leading to unsafe memory operations. Affected components include the HTTP.sys driver responsible for processing HTTP requests at the kernel level.
Vulnerability Description
HTTP Protocol Stack Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can remotely execute arbitrary code in the context of the SYSTEM account by sending crafted HTTP requests to the vulnerable Windows 10 systems, enabling full control over the affected machine. This can lead to complete system compromise, data theft, or disruption of services. The attack requires only network access to the HTTP service, with no user interaction or privileges necessary, as indicated by the CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N.
Solution
Microsoft has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in Windows 10 versions 20H2 and 21H1. Administrators should apply the patches provided in the Microsoft Security Response Center advisory available at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2022-21907. The update specifically targets the HTTP.sys driver to correct the memory handling errors. No alternative workarounds are recommended by Microsoft.
