CVE-2022-2068
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper sanitization of shell metacharacters within the c_rehash script distributed with OpenSSL. The script executes shell commands using certificate file names without adequately validating or escaping them, allowing injection of arbitrary commands. The affected component is the c_rehash shell script used for hashing certificates, which is automatically executed by some operating systems.
Vulnerability Description
In addition to the c_rehash shell command injection identified in CVE-2022-1292, further circumstances where the c_rehash script does not properly sanitise shell metacharacters to prevent command injection were found by code review. When the CVE-2022-1292 was fixed it was not discovered that there are other places in the script where the file names of certificates being hashed were possibly passed to a command executed through the shell. This script is distributed by some operating systems in a manner where it is automatically executed. On such operating systems, an attacker could execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the script. Use of the c_rehash script is considered obsolete and should be replaced by the OpenSSL rehash command line tool. Fixed in OpenSSL 3.0.4 (Affected 3.0.0,3.0.1,3.0.2,3.0.3). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1p (Affected 1.1.1-1.1.1o). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2zf (Affected 1.0.2-1.0.2ze).
Impact
An attacker can execute arbitrary shell commands with the privileges of the c_rehash script, which may be elevated depending on the operating system's deployment. No authentication or user interaction is required beyond supplying crafted certificate file names processed by the script. This can lead to full system compromise, unauthorized access, or disruption of services on systems where c_rehash is automatically executed.
Solution
Update OpenSSL to versions 3.0.4, 1.1.1p, or 1.0.2zf where the vulnerability is fixed. Refer to Debian Security Advisory DSA-5169 and Fedora package announcements for patch details. The OpenSSL advisory at https://www.openssl.org/news/secadv/20220621.txt provides comprehensive patch information. Additionally, discontinue use of the c_rehash script and replace it with the OpenSSL rehash command line tool as recommended by vendors.
