CVE-2022-1453
Overview
This vulnerability is an unauthenticated SQL Injection caused by improper handling of user-supplied input in the RSVPMaker WordPress plugin. Specifically, the rsvpmaker-util.php file fails to apply SQL escaping and parameterization to input data used in SQL queries. This lack of input sanitization in the database interaction layer enables injection of malicious SQL commands.
Vulnerability Description
The RSVPMaker plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthenticated SQL Injection due to missing SQL escaping and parameterization on user supplied data passed to a SQL query in the rsvpmaker-util.php file. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to steal sensitive information from the database in versions up to and including 9.2.5.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the backend database, enabling unauthorized access to sensitive information. No authentication or user interaction is required (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N), allowing full confidentiality, integrity, and availability compromise of the affected database. This can lead to data exfiltration, data manipulation, or denial of service within WordPress sites using the vulnerable RSVPMaker plugin versions.
Solution
Users should upgrade RSVPMaker to a version later than 9.2.5 where the vulnerability has been addressed. The Wordfence advisory (https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/6031edec-4274-4e42-9e3a-ce0c94958b17) and the GitHub commit bfb189f49af7ab0d34499a2da772e3266f72167d provide details on the fix. Administrators are advised to apply these updates promptly to mitigate the risk of exploitation.
