CVE-2026-93479
Overview
This vulnerability is a heap buffer overflow triggered by improper handling of regex capture variables within the map directive in NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source. The root cause lies in referencing regex capture variables from the map directive in the root directive or access log format prior to the map output variable, or using non-cacheable variables in string expressions under specific conditions. This flaw affects the NGINX worker process responsible for HTTP request handling and variable evaluation.
Vulnerability Description
A vulnerability exists in NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source when a map directive uses regex matching and the root directive or access log format references the map's regex capture variables before referencing the map output variable. Alternatively, the same result could be achieved by using a non-cacheable variable in a string expression under certain conditions. An unauthenticated attacker along with conditions beyond their control can exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted HTTP requests. This may cause a heap buffer overflow in the NGINX worker process leading to a restart. Additionally, attackers can execute code on systems with Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) disabled or when the attacker can bypass ASLR. Impact: This vulnerability may allow remote attackers to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) on the NGINX system or to possibly trigger a code execution. There is no control plane exposure; this is a data plane issue only. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely to cause denial-of-service by crashing the NGINX worker process, leading to service interruption. On systems with ASLR disabled or where ASLR can be bypassed, the attacker may achieve remote code execution, potentially gaining control over the affected server. This results in full system compromise or disruption of services relying on NGINX for HTTP traffic handling.
Solution
F5 Networks has released a security advisory (K000162607) addressing this issue in NGINX Plus. Users should apply the vendor-provided patches as specified in the advisory to affected versions of NGINX Plus. Detailed patch instructions and version updates are available at https://my.f5.com/manage/s/article/K000162607. No alternative workarounds are documented; timely application of the vendor fix is recommended.
