CVE-2026-87491
Overview
This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) occurring within the V8 JavaScript engine component of Google Chrome. The root cause is improper bounds checking during memory operations in V8's handling of crafted JavaScript code, leading to memory corruption. The flaw specifically affects versions of Google Chrome prior to 153.0.8010.36, compromising the integrity of the V8 sandbox environment.
Vulnerability Description
Out of bounds write in V8 in Google Chrome prior to 153.0.8010.36 allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the sandbox via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: Medium)
Impact
An attacker can execute arbitrary code within the sandboxed environment of the affected Chrome browser by convincing a user to visit a malicious web page. This allows for potential compromise of browser processes, leading to unauthorized code execution with user-level privileges. No prior authentication is needed, but user interaction is required to load the crafted content. The consequence includes possible data theft, session hijacking, or further exploitation of the host system through sandbox escapes.
Solution
Google Chrome users should update to version 153.0.8010.36 or later, which contains the fix for this vulnerability. Detailed patch instructions and update notifications are available in the official Google Chrome Stable Channel Update blog post at https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2026/09/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_0808145027.html. No additional workarounds are specified by the vendor.
