CVE-2026-86060
Overview
This vulnerability is a privilege escalation flaw caused by improper argument handling in the SSH login process of Mikrotik RouterOS. Specifically, usernames beginning with a prohibited character bypass input validation, allowing unauthorized modification of the trusted RouterOS policy mask. The affected component is the RouterOS SSH login helper, which processes authentication requests without sufficient sanitization of username parameters.
Vulnerability Description
RouterOS contains an argument-handling flaw in the SSH login path involving usernames that begin with a prohibited character, allowing for the trusted RouterOS policy mask to be changed, leading to privilege escalation. Exploitation requires an unauthenticated SSH session to reach the RouterOS login helper. This issue was fixed in versions: 6.49.21 (Long-term), 7.23.4 (Long-term) and 7.24.2 (Stable)
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability by initiating an SSH connection with a specially crafted username to escalate privileges within the RouterOS environment. This enables the attacker to gain elevated access rights, potentially allowing full control over the router’s configuration and operations. The attack requires no prior authentication or user interaction, increasing the risk of unauthorized system compromise and lateral movement within affected networks.
Solution
Mikrotik has addressed this vulnerability in RouterOS versions 6.49.21 (Long-term), 7.23.4 (Long-term), and 7.24.2 (Stable). Administrators should upgrade affected devices to these or later versions as detailed in the vendor advisory available at https://mikrotik.com/supportsec/september-2026-vulnerability/. No alternative mitigations or workarounds are specified in the advisory.
