CVE-2026-112900
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw originating from improper handling of user-controlled input filenames in the EpsImagePlugin.Ghostscript component of the Pillow Python imaging library. The root cause is the failure to sanitize or convert caller-supplied filenames to safe absolute paths before passing them as arguments to the Ghostscript interpreter, allowing filenames starting with hyphens to be interpreted as Ghostscript options.
Vulnerability Description
Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 2.6.0 until 13.0.0, Pillow is vulnerable to argument injection when invoking Ghostscript for EPS input. EpsImagePlugin.Ghostscript passes a caller-controlled input filename after -f without converting it to a safe absolute path, so a name beginning with a hyphen can be interpreted as a Ghostscript option. An attacker who controls the filename can inject Ghostscript arguments. Arbitrary command execution specifically requires a leading @ argument-file filename and control of the referenced text file containing additional Ghostscript arguments; the reported chain reproduces with the default -dSAFER invocation. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.
Impact
An attacker who can control the EPS filename and supply a crafted argument-file can inject arbitrary Ghostscript commands, enabling execution of arbitrary code on the host system without requiring authentication or user interaction. This can lead to full system compromise, unauthorized access to sensitive data, and disruption of services relying on Pillow for image processing.
Solution
Upgrade the Pillow library to version 13.0.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Refer to the official advisory GHSA-w889-685w-c8fh on the Pillow GitHub security advisories page for detailed patch instructions. The fix involves sanitizing input filenames passed to Ghostscript to prevent argument injection. No alternative workarounds are documented.
